CLARIFIED by Regents of the University of California (2025) PERB Order No. Ad-525-H, to provide that the University of California IX unit (also referred to as “Unit 18,” the “Non-Senate Faculty (NSF) Unit,” or the “Non-Senate Instructional Unit”) is not a “teaching-only” unit. There is no bar to placing employees in the IX unit merely because they also perform duties other than teaching, such as research and service.

PERB unit placement determinations are not confined to the particular unit configurations petitioned for by any party. Hearing Officer’s finding that petitioned for classification would be more appropriately included in another existing unit not improper when determining whether inclusion in the petitioned-for unit is appropriate.
